Fred A. Spancake, 100, Hollidaysburg, died Sun., Feb. 21 at Altoona Hospital. He was born in Pine Grove Township, Schuylkill County, to William & Effie (Weinrich) Spancake. He married Marian M. Mellott July 30, 1942, at the United Pres. Church, McConnellsburg. She died May 14, 2006, after 64 years of marriage. Surviving are sons: Lee & wife, Bonnie (Larson), York and Larry & wife, Jan Stuart, Washington, D.C., and grandchildren: Jodie & Dane, both York. Fred was a 1926 graduate of Pine Grove High School and a 1931 graduate of Penn State Univ. He was employed as supervising principal in the following school districts: Polk Township, Kresgeville; Alexandria, Porter; & Logan twp. He was asst. supt. of Blair County and served as asst. executive director of IU 8 until his retirement in 1974. Member of Portage Lodge 220, F&AM. He enjoyed reading and gardening. He restored and refinished household furniture as a hobby after retirement. His family sees a miracle in their loved one's life as he had been born weighing only 2 pounds and was fed with a medicine dropper. Interment with graveside service, Sat., Feb. 27, at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Pine Grove.
