TAYLOR — Services for Ernestine Thompson, 80, of Pflugerville will be 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, 4805 Heflin Lane, Austin.
Pre-celebration will be 7 p.m. Friday at the church.
Mrs. Thompson died Saturday, Feb. 20, at her residence.
Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at King-Tears Mortuary Inc. in Austin.
A Life Celebration by Franklin is in charge of arrangements.

Ernestine Lavan Thompson was born in Milano, Texas on April 30, 1929,
the second child of the late John and Essie Lee Lavan.

Ernestine attended school in the Milano Independent School District in
Milano, Texas. She graduated from Harnsbury High School in 1947. Soon
after graduating, she moved to Austin, Texas where she enrolled at
Samuel Huston College (now Huston-Tillotson University). She graduated
in 1950 with a Bachelor's of Arts in Education. She was also a member
of Alpha Beta Kappa.

Ernestine was employed with the Austin Independent School District for
many years, primarily serving as an auditor for the district. In 1963,
she received her certification from the Texas Board of Education to
teach all grades. With the desire to advance her career, she relocated
to Battle Creek Michigan.

Upon settling in Michigan, she began her employment career at the
Calhoun Intermediate School District. For several years, she was the
director of the summer school program. She enrolled in the University
of Michigan and graduated in 1976 with a Master's of Arts in
Education. She maintained and graduated with a 4.0 GPA. In 1975, from
UOM, she also received a certification for leadership development,
vocational and technical education. She also earned a certification to
teach handicapped children from Western Michigan University in 1961.

Ernestine united with Goodwill Baptist Church at an early age under
the pastorage of Rev. A. W. Ray. In 1951 Ernestine married Harold
Thompson and moved to Battle Creek, Michigan where she resided until
1990. After relocating to Pflugerville, Texas, she joined First
Baptist Church in Austin, Texas where she was a faithful member. She
was also a dedicated member of the Order of Eastern Star and the
American Revolution.

Until her retirement in 2002, she served her community faithfully
doing all she could to preserve the history of the church and
community through her work on the Texas Historical Commission and the
W. H. Passon Historical Society. In 2003, as an individual owner,
Ernestine founded the Jacob Fontaine Religious Museum. She held the
dual role of founder and President of the foundation. Her work was
recognized with various prestigious citations and awards including the
Community Service Award from the Daughters of the American Revolution
on May 21, 2006. She also served on the committee of the North Austin
Community Association where she helped to improve neighborhood watch
programs.

Ernestine departed this life on Saturday, February 20, 2010 in her
home in Austin, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband,
Harold and one sister, Joyce Lavan Thomas.

She leaves to cherish her memory three loving brothers, Johnnie Lavan,
Jr. (late Naomi) of Temple, Texas, Willie Lavan of Cameron, Texas, and
Leroy Lavan of Houston, Texas, a host of nieces, nephews, and other
relatives and friends. A devoted nephew and niece, Gary and Rebecca
Moore.
