Naomi Pearl (Scott) Almond, 108, of McGaheysville, Va., died early Monday morning, March 12, 2018, at White Birch Communities assisted living home. She was born May 25, 1909, in Rockingham County and was the daughter of the late Harvey Haines and Florence Edmonia (Connell) Scott of Port Republic, Va.

Mrs. Almond was a lifetime resident of Rockingham County and after graduating from Port Republic High School in 1927 and State Teachers College at Harrisonburg, now James Madison University, in June 1930, she taught school in Rockingham County for 29 years at Mount Pleasant School east of Elkton, Grottoes Elementary School, and McGaheysville Elementary School before retiring in 1974. She was a member of the McGaheysville United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years, and a member of the Shenandoah Valley Chapter No. 76 of the Order of the Eastern Star until her death.

As a member of the local 4-H Club in 1929, she was selected to represent the club in a poultry-judging contest at Madison Square Garden in New York City, where she became the first female to win the New England Poultryman Trophy for first place in poultry judging.

She loved tending her vegetable garden and cooking at her home until becoming handicapped in August 2010 at the age of 101 with a broken hip, which caused her to be hospitalized and then moved to assisted living facilities for rehabilitation and assisted care. She was very grateful for all the tender loving care that was given to her by all of the loving and wonderful caretakers and administrators, and the friendship and kindness of her wonderful fellow residents at White Birch Communities for over seven years.

On Aug. 12, 1938, she married H. Hilton Almond, who preceded her in death on Aug. 14, 1989. She is survived by one son, one daughter, one brother, five grandchildren, one stepgrandchild, 10 great-grandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers: Dr. Charles W. Scott, Arthur R. Scott, Herman A. Scott and Harvey H. Scott; and one sister, Florence Virginia Wonderley.

After a brief service by the Shenandoah Valley Chapter No. 76 of the Order of the Eastern Star at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 16, the family will receive friends until 8 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday morning, March 17, 2018, at 10 at McGaheysville United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jim Wingert and the Rev. Wayne Wright. Burial will follow in the Mount Olivet Cemetery on Cemetery Road in McGaheysville.
