Charles Chewey
(September 3, 1935 - April 29, 2008)

Funeral services for Charles Chewey, age 72, of Stilwell, were held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, May 1, 2008, at Hart Memorial Chapel with Bro. Claude Gregory officiating. Interment followed at Blackwood Cemetery under the direction of Hart Funeral Home.

Charles Chewey was born on September 3, 1935 to Leona "Mary Jane" Crittenden and Looney Chewey. Charles attended Peavine Elementary and then on to Chilloco Indian School where he graduated in 1953.

Charles liked to play music and was a self-taught musician. He liked to play guitar, violin and also really liked to listen to gospel and blue grass music.

He knew that there were few jobs unless you went out and "got educated". He started out working as a youngster who collected scrap metal to sell then on to the charcoal mill at Baron.

He met and married Mary Lou Owl on June 24, 1954 in Stilwell, Ok. Together they had three children, one daughter and two sons.

Charles joined a Relocation Program that took him and his family to St. Louis, Missouri. There he learned to be a machinist. He worked at Wagoner Engraving Company for several years. Charles and his family would come back to Stilwell during the summer on vacation and he saw all the improvements being made for people and decided to move his family "back home" in 1970. Charles then worked for Citation in Siloam Springs, Arkansas for a while, then on to Franklin Electric where he worked for twenty-five years and then retired.

He saw all his children graduate from Stilwell High School. He was very proud of that fact. He always stressed several points to us, not in a preachy, holier than thou way, but more of a, "Trust in the Lord" way. He always listened to us and would always give good sound advice.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Leona "Mary Jane" Crittenden and Looney Chewey, four brothers, Lloyd Stayathome, Laverne, Carl and George Crittenden, three sisters, Mary Thompson, Juanita Briggs and Glorena Doyle, one grandson, Charles Michael "Gibb" Vann.

Charles is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary Lou Chewey of the home, daughter, Anita Faye Vann and friend Donavan Duncan, sons, Frank Chewey of the home, Dennis Chewey and wife Clara of Stilwell, his grandchildren, Phillip Alan Vann and Lance Vann of Stilwell, Daniel Lee Chewey and wife Kristen of Midwest City, Ok, Isaac Chewey, deployed with the Marines, Dennis James Chewey, Jr. of Stilwell, Melissa Catron and friend Joe Billy of Siloam Springs, Arkansas, one great granddaughter, Lillian Brooke Chewey, one great grandson Koda Billy and numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Charles passed on from this life to his heavenly life on April 29, 2008 in Stilwell, Oklahoma.
