He was born in Minisink, Orange County, New York.

He was a cooper by trade; he made barrels.

He lived in Catlin, Chemung, New York, 1864, age 28, he joined the Masonic Lodge at Montour Falls, Schuyler. He was a member for 47 years.

At Elmira, NY, March 31, 1865 he joined 194th Regiment, Infantry, NY Volunteer Militia. He was mustered into Co. C., as a private, and was promoted to Sergeant, April 8, 1865; by order of the War Department he was mustered out with his company at Elmira, with his company, May 3, 1865. About 1869 he married Emma M. Kelley in Chemung, New York.

About 1869 they moved to Holland, Michigan.

They had a son Leon 1873 at Holland Michigan. He remained a cooper. He was Worthy Master of his Masonic Lodge in 1877.

They moved to Grand Rapids before 1880, and lived there the rest of their lives. He became a life member of his Masonic Lodge when he had thirty years membership in 1894.
