Gilbert Hartley was born about 1845 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvnia, and came west by wagon circa 1848 with his parents and older siblings. He is the son of John Hartley who was born July 13, 1812 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and Catherine O. Spangler “Cassie/Cassa” who was born June 30, 1814, in Pennsylvania and christened October 11, 1814 at the First Trinity Reform Church in York, York County, Pennsylvania. John Hartley was a wagonmaker and farmer. John died March 20, 1874 in Aracadia, Hamilton County, Indiana. Cassie died November 23, 1900 in Arcadia. John and Cassie and several of their descendants are buried in the Arcadia Brethern Cemetery in Arcadia, Hamilton County, Indiana.
Genealogy research suggests the surname Hartley is an anglicized German surname.

Gilbert was a Civil War Veteran, Co. L 6th Indiana Cavalry, Pvt., he also served in Co. G.
He was carried on the rolls as Gilbert Harley, also Gilbert Hartley
He enrolled July 9, 1863, mustered in September 22, 1863, to serve 3 years.
Mustered out at Murfreesboro, Tennessee on September 15, 1865.

Gilbert's older brothers George Benjamin b. January 20, 1836, William Henry born October 12, 1838, and Albert born March 7, 1843, all served for the Union in the Civil War. Their military records indicate that Gilbert was much taller than his older brothers.

Military record from National Archives describes Gilbert as 6 foot 2 inches tall with light
eyes, a light complexion and dark hair.
George Benjamin is described as a wagonmaker, 5 foot 6 inches, with blue eyes, dark hair and a fair complexion. George was wounded in the right breast and shoulder and lost the sight of his right eye at Chicakamauga.
William was described as a wagonmaker, 5 foot 6 ½ inches tall with blue eyes, auburn hair and a florid complexion. William suffered hearing loss from the war.
Albert is described as 5 foot 9 inches tall with blue eyes, dark hair and a fair complexion. Albert was wounded in the thigh at Nashville, December 16, 1864.

At age 34 in 1875 , Gilbert makes a pension request stating he injured his back and a leg in a fall from a horse in 1864 while serving in the war. In 1875, his declared occupation is laborer and he is living in Arcadia, Hamilton Co., Indiana.
Later in 1879, he stated he was only able to perform manual labor about half of his time.
His pension request due to injury was denied for lack of evidence.

Gilbert Hartley married June 17, 1866 in (Tipton County?), Indiana to Isabelle M. Dunn who was per census records born in Indiana about 1844. She was the daughter of Harrison Dunn and Harriet (surname not known) who were born in Virginia. It is suspected that a George W. Dunn is likely a brother to Isabelle. Isabelle and Gilbert had three children: Ellen Isabelle b. about 1867, Dora Katherine “Kate” b. November 15, 1869 and Emanuel Spangler “Manley” born July 3, 1875, in Millersburg, Hamilton County, Indian. Isabelle died on May 3, 1876 in Indiana.

Gilbert's second marriage as a widower with three small children was to Susan C. McGraw “Susie” on March 10, 1880 in Noblesville, Hamilton County, Indiana. Susan's parents are John McGraw and Mary Jones.
Gilbert and Susan had Alexander G. b. September 19, 1881, Benjamin Franklin b. December 15, 1883, Flossie Gertrude b. July 21, 1884, and Oscar W. born May 8, 1886 in Millersburg, Hamilton County, Indiana..
Gilbert is said to have died on February 12, 1887 in Kokomo, Howard County, Indiana, in an accident by falling as he was trying to board a train. He was a railroad employee at the time of his death.
Widow Susan later married Charles Startzman on May 17, 1888 in Hamilton County and they had five children: Lewis/Louis, Clara, Virgil, Mary M. and Olive.

One wonders if Gilbert's issues with his back and leg contributed to his fall under the train. At the time it was not a rare occurrence for railroaders to die due to impact by a train.
