The son of John S. & Anna (Sponsler) Snyder, in 1860 he was a miller living with his parents in Spring Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 7" tall and had dark hair and dark eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he first enlisted in Elliottsburg, Perry County, June 16, 1863, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg June 22 as a private with Co. A, 20th Pennsylvania Cavalry (181st Pa), and honorably discharged with his company January 6, 1864. He then enlisted in Harrisburg September 5, 1864, and mustered into federal service there September 7 as a teamster with Co. E, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry. He suffered a compound fracture of the right tibia and fibula when a wagon rolled over his leg and initially hospitalized at Hampton, Virginia. Sometime during March 1865, he transferred to the medical facility at Willet's Point, New York, and finally to the army hospital in York, Pennsylvania, where he honorably discharged the service July 15, 1865.

Between enlistments, he married Emily Matilda Kistler February 11, 1864, in Perry County and ultimately fathered Ida or Alda Lula (b. 02/04/65), William Willis (b. 03/21/67), James Dilaran (b. 10/26/68), Annie Jane (b. 04/19/71), Mary Ellen (b. 02/24/73), John Edwin (b. 04/28/75), George Alfred (b. 08/16/77), and Elizabeth May (b. 10/03/79). By 1880, he had moved his family to Polk County, Florida, later moved them again to Kansas, but by 1901, they were residents of Newkirk, Kay County, Oklahoma Territory.
