He was part of the 1 Grenadier Guards Battle Group deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.
LSgt Walker died as a result of small arms fire in the Nad-e-Ali area of central Helmand province. He was the section commander of a ground patrol conducted as part of Operation Moshtarak.
Aged 36, from Glasgow. He joined the battalion in 1994 and served in Dungannon and Belfast in Northern Ireland and a tour of duty in Iraq. He was also an infantry training instructor and passed on his experience and wealth of knowledge to many young recruits. Known as "Davey", he was considered a consummate professional soldier and natural leader. Comrades said he kept morale high with banter no one could match and was tough as old boots. He will also be remembered for his passion for fishing, football and Celtic Football Club.
LSgt Walker is survived by his wife Teresa, their children Sarah, Fiona, Darren, Trisha and James, his mother Mary, brothers, other family and friends along with his dog Shamrock.
Requiem Mass at St Alban's RC Church, Blackburn was held on March 11, 2010 followed by interment with full military honours.
In September 2010, LSgt Walker was posthumously awarded the Queen's Commendation for Bravery in recognition of his gallant service.
