Byron Smythe, 64, willage marshal of Benton, died Saturday noon (Jan. 16, 1965) of a heart attack suffered at the home of Mike Griffin, where he had been called on official business. He had been Benton marshal for the last 15 years, serving to the satisfaction of the village and county authorities.
The body rested at the Milner & O'Flahrity Funeral Home, Benton, where friends called after 4 p.m. Sunday.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Benton Primitive Methodist Church, with burial in the church cemetery in the family lot.
The Rev. Robert Bailey officiated., Vocal music was furnished by Mrs. Bailey and Mrs. Charlotte Murray was the organist.
The following patrolmen and the sheriff of Lafayette County acted as pallbearers: Robert Wilton, Clarence Johnson, Holmer Lovelace, Virgil Smith, Herman Krupke, Omar Thorpe, Harold Mullen, and Edward Thompson.
He is survived by his wife, Genevieve; two step-sons, Richard in the U. S. Army, Ft. Lewis, Wash., and Billy, at home; two step-daughters, Mrs. Barbara Lacke of Shullsburg, and Judy, at home; six grandchildren; two brothers, Foster, Chicago, Ill., and Verne D. of Benton; one sister, Mrs Genevieve Beil, Madison.
