Our Aunt Imogene was born at home on May 29, 1916 in Martinsburg, WV. "Jean" was the fifth child of George Amos & Ruth Mary Zeigler Martin. Her parents had ten children; eight of whom lived into adulthood. Imogene was named, Imogene Nenon.

Imogene graduated from King's Daughters Hospital School of Nursing in Martinsburg, WV in May 1939. She worked as a surgical nurse in Martinsburg, WV, Charlottesville, VA and Luray, VA.

Imogene married Joseph Everett Grove on June 20, 1942; Joe died May 20, 1963. Three years later, she married Cyril D. "Cy" Odell on November 12, 1966; Cy died January 21, 1977.

Aunt Jean was a great cook - as everyone in the family often remarked. She also loved to needlepoint, crochet and embroider; a talent she and her sister, Juanita, had a gift for doing. When I was about 15 years old, Aunt Jean sent me and my sisters quilts that our Grandmother Ruth made. Jean made sure that all of the granddaughters in the family each received one.

I visited Aunt Jean as a very young child and do not remember it, but I met her again in October 1989 at the home of my Aunt Juanita in Martinsburg, WV and will never forget it. She was a lovely lady and carried herself beautifully. She spoke with honesty and kindness and I really admired her for that. I visited Aunt Jean again in 1995 at her home in Luray, VA. At this time she was not well. Despite her poor health, we spent a wonderful afternoon together and she told me she was glad I made the journey to see her. Aunt Jean died six months later - less than two months after my Mom's sudden death.

At the time of her death, Imogene was survived by her son and only child, Joseph Everett Grove II; daughter-in-law, Beverly Sylvia Grove; granddaughters, Stephanie Dawn Grove and Amanda Nicole Grove all of Falmouth, VA. Sisters; Vauda Rauchwerger of Asheville, NC. and Alda Sue Martin of Leesburg, Va. Brother, Robert C Martin of Hendersonville, NC and many nieces and nephews.

Imogene was preceded in death by her sisters; Juanita McCormick, Betty Sigler, Joyce Schuman, Roberta Martin and her brothers; Ralph W. Martin and George A. Martin, Jr.

Our Aunt Jean died on March 14, 1996 in Luray, VA. She is buried at Beahm's Chapel Cemetery next to her first husband, Joe Grove.
