Distinguished Citizen of the Central City Breathes Last
Macon, Ga., March 6--(Special)--Joseph Marshall Johnston, one of the leading and wealthiest citizens of Macon, died tonight at 9:30 o'clock, the cause of his death being heart disease. Mr. Johnston had been in ill health for some time.
He was married in 1871 to Miss Mattie Huguenin, of Macon, and leaves two children, Richard W. Johnston, of Macon, and Mrs. William Kountz, of New York. In addition, he is survived by three brothers and two sisters, as follows: W. McEwen Johnston, of Macon; Bon Johnston, Macon; N. Johnston, Loudon; Mrs. Cook, Macon, and Mrs. Richard P. Wilson, of New York.
No funeral arrangements have yet been made for the funeral.
Positions Held by Deceased.
At the time of his death, Joseph Marshall Johnston was a member of the board of directors of the following companies: Goergia Southern and Florida railway; Gainesville and Gulf railway, and Bibb Manufacturing Company. He was until recently a member of the board of directors of the Southwestern road, having declined reelection at the last meeting of the stockholders because of ill health.
He was president of the American national bank from 1893 until the time of his death. He was also a member of the bond commission of the city of Macon. At one time he was director in the old East Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia road, and was prominently identified with the management of that company. During the time the Macon and Brunswick road was owned by R. T. Wilson & Co., Mr. Johnston was in direct charge of this property.
