Johnny "Torrey" Seed

"Bill McChesney was always interested in trees. when I was a baby in 1942 we lived on the south end of Neptune Ave. in Encinitas, Calif. and he planted eucalyptus trees all along the road.

Later in his life he became very interested in Torrey Pine trees. They grew south of us along hwy 101 on the cliff above the Pacific Ocean. He was determined to grow them in more places. He even hired a plane and got permission from the military to fly over the Santa Rosa Island off the coast of Santa Barbara to see if they were growing there. Apparently, he found no Torrey Pine trees, so he recruited some residents in Del mar to save the seeds from the Torrey pine cones for him.

He researched the germination of the seeds and planted them all over our patio. He gave many small trees away to anyone who was interested. He even took some to Montana and planted them there. He gave hundreds away to the Los Angeles School District for landscaping at schools in the LA area. Eventually he planted small Torrey Pine trees along El Camino Real in Encinitas."
