Died-- at his home in Milam township, Macon county, Ill. on Sept. 16th, 1892, at 9 Pm David J. Freeland, of cancer of the stomache, in his 74th year.
The subject of the above notice was born in Osage county, N. C,.April 19, 1891 and came to Illinois in October, 1836. And in commencing his life work in this new and wild country he made it one of his first duties to find a home in the Christian communion and he selected for that home the Cumberland Presbyterian church, where he held his membership and sustained a good christian name for 56 years.
He was twice married, first to Miss Sarah Strain(3/26/1841 in Shelby county)daughter of David Strain, one of the pioneer settlers of Moultrie county and by her he had one son,Alexander S. Freeland, who is a very highly respected citizen of the community.
His second marriage was to Miss Martha Sawyer(4/4/1848 in Coles county)daughter of John Sawyer, one of the early settlers of Coles Co,Ill.
He had seven children by his second wife, who survives him, two sons and five daughters, C. W. Freeland, John J. Freeland, Mrs. Mary Sanner, Mrs. Jane Ekiss, Mrs. Eunice Scott, Mrs.Rebecca Hottrell and Mrs. Josie Kellar. Three daughters preceded him to the heavenly land. They are all very highly respected citizens where they live and it may be truly said of Bro. Freeland that he has done a good work. His suffering was extreme for several months before his death, but he endured it all without a murmur and while his children all have good homes and are well educated, he leaves an heritage to his wife and children of over 400 acres of land in Macon and Moultrie counties and also property in the city of Sullivan.
His funeral services were held at his home and were largely attended by sympathizing friends. Services were conducted by Rev. W.L. Bankson of Blue Mound.
