Charles Ashby Atkins, 82, of 294 First St. in Luray, died Monday, May 12, 2008, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg. Mr. Atkins was born Aug. 10, 1925, in Luray, and was a son of the late Catherine E. Atkins Brown. He was raised by his grandparents, George W. and Anita Beahm Atkins. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Marines and was a member of Lafayette Lodge No. 137 A.F.&A.M. and the Luray VFW Post No. 621. He was owner and operator of Stanley Market and meat cutter until 1978. He was a member of Main Street Baptist Church. On July 16, 1960, he married Irma R. Powell, who survives. He is also survived by his children, Connie Lou Sours, Louise Mauck and Catherine May Kibler, all of Luray, and Stuart B. Atkins of Rileyville; three sisters, Betty Overhulser of Palm Harbor, Fla., Barbara Poe of Warrenton and Shirley Kushner of Bethesda, Md.; two brothers, Strawther Brown and Julian Brown, both of Sperryville; 12 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren. The Rev. Robert W. Rueter will conduct a graveside service 11 a.m. Thursday at Beahm's Chapel Cemetery in Luray. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Bradley Funeral Home in Luray.
