Grace Boehning was a graduate of Baylor School of Nursing, Dallas, Texas. On July 2, 1928 she assisted in the birth of her nephew, David Boatman, at the home of her mother, Ludie Clark. Two days later, on July Fourth, she married Dr. Harold Boehning at Albany, Texas.

Harold was a graduate of SMU and interned at Baylor Hosptial, Dallas, Texas. He and Grace were medical missionaries, under auspices of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South stationed at Songdo (Kaesong), Korea, from 1928 to December 1940. The family left with little more than their lives during the Imperial Japanese Occupation.
