James Zearing Colton was the son of Buel P. Colton and Charlotte Zearing and the husband of Anna Youngs Chase. James graduated from Swarthmore College, Class of 1912. In 1913 he graduated from Amherst College. James was a prize-winning orator in college.

James became a horticulturalist and along with brother Kingsley Buel Colton he established a thriving cranberry farm named 'Coltonberry' near Springbrook, Washburn Co, WI.

After James' death (probably in the Spanish flu epidemic) his widow Anna remarried to Earl George Grissel.
