James was the 5th of 11 children of Daniel & Barbara McFadden. He was born in Clinton Township and died in Irwin Township; both in Venango County, Pennsylvania.

James was a farmer and he also engaged in the production of coal in Butler County, PA.

He married Louise Jane Walter about 1884 in Irwin Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania. Between 1885 and 1900 they had 4 boys and 4 girls. In the order of their birth they were named: Lucy Ann, Ayres F, Thomas Ayers, Iva Emily, Frank Carlisle, Carrie Myrtle, James Clair and Ernest Leonard McFadden.
