Barbara was the 3rd of 6 children of her parents George Hovis and Mary Hoffman.

Barbara married Daniel Webster McFadden on October 10th, 1850 in Venango County, Pennsylvania. Between 1851 and 1869 they had 7 boys and 4 girls. In the order of birth they named their children: George, John, Susannah, Sarah, James, William, Perry, Caroline, Henry, Thomas and Mary Jane McFadden.

Her husband was a skilled mechanic as well as a capable farmer, having learned the trade of wagonmaker, and he established a shop on their farm. For some years he operated a sawmill which stood on the place when he bought it, and he was often called upon to make coffins.

He also held offices of both constable and Justice of the Peace in Irwin Township.
