Emily W. Smith Colton was the daughter of Albigence 'Alby' and Sarah Smith and the wife of Chauncey Donaldson Colton. Emily and her husband were active on the Underground Railroad which helped runaway slaves on their way to freedom in Canada.

Death notice from 'The Bureau County Tribune,' Princeton, Bureau County, Illinois, January 15, 1892:
"Mrs. Emily Colton died Friday evening, January 8, 1892, from la grippe, in her 74th years, leaving a husband, Chauncey D. Colton, and two children, Mrs. Reeve Norton of Mitchellville, Iowa and Prof. D.(sic) P. Colton, of the State University, Normal, Ill.
The subject of this sketch was born in Williamstown, Vermont in 1818, and was the oldest daughter of Deacon Alby and Sally Smith. Her parents removed from Vermont to Gouverneur, N.Y., in 1823 and from there to Springfield, Ill., where they joined the Hampshire Colony in 1835 and came to Princeton, where she was married to Chauncey d. Colton in 1837. While at Gouverneur Mrs. Colton, then a little girl, became a communicant of the Congregational church, and upon arrival in Princeton became a member of the Hampshire Colony Congregational Church, with which she has been connected the past 54 years. All who have had the pleasure of Mrs. Colton's acquaintance can only speak of her in the most endearing terms, for she was possessed of a most lovable and Christian character. Inured to hardships and privations from her early experiences, she was imbued with the desire of doing good to others through the fellow-healing engendered by her early contact with the stern realities of life. Sunday afternoon services were held over the remains at the deceased's late residence two miles east of Princeton and at 2:30, before a large congregation of friends and relatives, who deeply mourn her loss, impressive ceremonies and the last rites of the church were tendered to the memory of Mrs. Chauncey D. Colton, at the Congregational church. Rev. E. H. Votaw officiating, assisted by Revs. Williams and Warren. The remains were followed to beautiful Oakland and laid their last resting place amid tears of the many who will keep her memory green."
