Nathan, nicknamed "Shootin' Nath" was the son of Charles and Dolly Burchfield Hughes of Blount or Monroe County, TN. On Dec. 3, 1891, he married 21 year old Martha Birchfield at Yellow Creek in Graham County, NC. She was the daughter of William "Bill" M. Birchfield and Cynthia Lynn. He died of bronchial pneumonia and is buried in Boyd Cemetery in Eureka, Roane County, TN.
