Elzia was born in Jay County Indiana. His father, Jefferson Jessup died when Elzia was a very young boy. Elzia's mother Sarah Jane Malloy Jessup moved to Vermilion County, IL where her brother was living. She met and married Mr. Richards. Elzia went to college and became a school teacher. While a teacher he met and married Edna Snell. Later he was a switchman for the railroad and also did some farming. He and Edna had seven children. Roy, Gordon, Allen, Esther, Ruth, Wilbur and Nina Leone.
