His father, Isaac Chase, also a whaling ship captain. Was at his home at Swansea, when the British burned the town, and his house. He took his 10 children and Rufuses 3 children and moved to Providence, Rhode Island.
Rufuses great-grandchildren, the Merritts, in Medina, New York, had a swing made from rope made from twisted whale baleen. It had been a bed rope used to hold the mattress.
Later in the Revolutionary War, Rufus and brother James moved their families to Guilford, Windham, Vermont. Rufus named a daughter after his ship, Britannia.
