Moweaqua, Nov. 26, 1909. — Mrs Sarah Rice, one of Moweaqua's oldest and most prominent citizens, died at her home in that city at 3 o clock this morning, with cancer of the stomach.
She has been critically ill for several weeks, during which time her suffering has been intense, so that death came as a great relief.
Mrs. Rice, whose maiden name was Sarah Yocum, was born at Staunton, Ind, Jan. 6, 1842. She married Martin Adams in 1862, and they came at once to Illinois and settled on a farm west of Moweaqua. Mr. Adams died three years later. Three children were born to them, only one of whom is now living. This is Mrs. Thomas Knowles of Moweaqua, mother of Mrs. William McGinly of Decatur.
Mrs. Rice was a widow for two years and then married George F. Rice, a prosperous farmer, whose land adjoined hers. She was his third wife, and he was then the father of six children, one of whom, George F. Rice, is a real estate man with office on South Water street in Decatur. Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Rice. One of them, Mrs. Rachel Yantis, died several years ago. The others are Mrs. Frank Clark of East Cantrell street, Decatur; Mrs. A. R. Spicer of Dixon; Mrs. F. D. Pratz, Chicago, and Charles W. Rice of Mowaqua. Mr Rice died in 1899. Mrs Rice has been an active member of the Christian church since girlhood, becoming a member at 14, and was well known for her good deeds and kindly disposition. There are surviving one son, four daughters, three sisters, one brother, eleven grandchildren and three great grandchildren, the latter the family of Attorney William McGinley of Decatur.
