Sister Bernard Marie Boland, FSM

Sister Boland was born Aug. 12, 1902, in New Haven, the daughter of William Boland and wife Hendrina, nee Lakebrink.

She joined the congregation now known as the Franciscan Sisters of Mary in 1923 and professed her final vows in 1929. Sister Boland earned her bachelor's degree in nursing education from St. Louis University, St. Louis. She ministered as an operating room supervisor at St. Mary's Hospital and Medical Center, Madison, Wis., St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center, Blue Island, Ill., and St. Clare Medical Center, Baraboo, Wis. Sister Boland moved to Dillon, S.C., in 1966, serving initially in the operating and emergency rooms of St. Eugene Hospital and later as emergency room head nurse, ECG/ER technician, EKG technician and CPF aide. She retired at age 80 and began work in the cardiopulmonary department. She retired from full-time employment at age 90. Sister Boland developed a pressed flower card-making ministry. She was honored as one of the 50 St. Louisans profiled in "Ageless—Remarkable St. Louisans." Sister Boland is survived by many nieces and nephews, extended family, other relatives and many friends. A memorial Mass was held Tuesday, March 22, at the Franciscan Sisters of Mary's St. Mary of Angels Convent in Richmond Heights. She donated her body to science. Memorials to the Franciscan Sisters of Mary Tribute Fund, 1100 Bellevue Ave., St. Louis, MO 63117 are preferred.
