George was a 2nd Lt in the Air Force and was flying a B-25 Bomber when it was struck by flak over the target, Perugia Aerodrome in Central Italy. 3 members of the crew were able to jump to safety. 3 other crew members were killed. Lt. Ashmore jumped from the plane but it was reported by Italian residents that his parachute did not open. His body was found near the crashed air plane. The bodies of the other two crew members were found in the wreckage. The Headstone reads that he was a 1st Lt. Probably awarded posthumous after his death. The three crew members were first buried in Italy.
