Civil War Veteran

On a summer morning in 1897, Randall and his wife Mary Elizabeth were driving his spirited team of horses to Moweaqua.  They picked up a neighbor and stopped at his daughter Pearl's (Grandma Wetzel) house on the way.  As they were going through Gingerville, there were a bunch of gypsies in their covered wagons coming along the road.  They frightened the horses and they began bolting.  In the commotion Randall lost his balance and fell from the spring wagon they were riding in.  As he fell the neighbor they had picked up, grabbed his foot and he was dragged.  The wheels of the wagon then rolled over him, breaking some ribs and puncturing a lung.  The horses were running wildly but Mary Elizabeth got hold of one of the lines and pulled the team into a barbed wire fence, thus stopping them just before they got to the Slew Bridge.Randall was taken back to Pearl's house where the doctor came and attended to him.  The Randall was put on a cot in the spring wagon and taken back to his home "Adams Grove", where died a few days later.  He was 62 years old at the time of this terrible accident.
