Reed ( Reid), age 18, enlisted as a Private in Company G (Brownsville Rifles), 5th Arkansas Infantry, June 10, 1861 at Brownsville, Arkansas, sent to Marietta, Georgia Hospital fall of 1863, reenlisted for the war at Tunnel Hill, Georgia February 17, 1864, captured at Jonesboro, Georgia August 29, 1864, forwarded to Louisville, Ky. via Nashville, Tn. October 27, 1864, sent two days later to Camp Douglas, Illinois prison camp, discharged May 15, 1865 at Camp Douglas, resident of Prairie County, Arkansas, fair complexion, dark hair, brown eyes, 5' 10"
The Brownsville Rifles, Co. G, 5th Arkansas Infantry, was organized at Brownsville, Prairie County, Arkansas, on May 31, 1861. It was mustered into State service on June 10, 1861, for 90 days. The Brownsville Rifles, accompanied by the Austin Rifles (from Austin, Prairie County, Arkansas), then marched to Pocahontas, Arkansas, where they joined their regiment. The 5th Arkansas was transferred from State service to Confederate service for twelve months on July 27, 1861.
Samuel P. Reid first married Sarah Carolina Massey the daughter of John "Jack" Massey and Seleta Wallace Massey. Sarah died at her son Benjamin Reid home in Mt. Pleasant, Texas in 1898 and was probably buried in the Center Grove cemetery. There are two unmarked graves beside Samuel Reid. They are believed to be Sarah Massey Reid and Martha Jane Reid Stewart.
A Confederate marker was placed at Samuel's grave by his descendants in July of 2015.
