Son of Keating L. S. Nelson and his wife Julia Rogers. On June 12, 1877, he married Miss Maria Bruce Matthews, of Port Tobacco, Maryland. They had no children. When Bishop Nelson died, his closest surviving relative was a sister, Mrs. Mason, of Washington, D. C.
Four Episcopalian bishops took part in the funeral services for Bishop Nelson: Bishop Albion Knight and Bishop Thomas F. Gailor, both of Tennessee; Bishop Frederick Reese, of Georgia; and Bishop Theodore Bratton, of Mississippi.
Before he died, Bishop Nelson expressed a wish to be buried as near as possible to his old friend, the (then) late Thomas Egleston, and accordingly, Bishop Nelson is buried in a lot adjoining the Egleston lot in Westview Cemetery.
