Chester L. Spence, 85, of Little York, IL, died 8:10 PM, Monday, February 8, 2010 at Cottage Hospital, Galesburg.

He was born August 5, 1924 in Alexis, IL the son of Ernest and Gertrude (Johnson) Spence. He was raised and educated in Alexis.

Chet served with the Untied States Army during World War II where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

Chet married Shirley Brown in Aledo, IL on July 19, 1947 and she survives.

Chet did many things during his lifetime but mainly he was a farmer. He loved people and never met a stranger. He loved spending time with his family and his dog, J.J.

He was a member of the James Harvey Scott American Legion Post #136 in Alexis.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Spence of Little York; 2 daughters, Connie Thomas of Little York and Linda Collins of Midland, TX; son, Rick (Ida) Spence of Las Vegas, NM; 8 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, 1 brother, Jack (Dorothy) Spence of Monmouth, several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Trudy Spence; 1 brother and 2 sisters.

Graveside services will be 10:00 A.M. Friday, Feb. 12, 2010 in Alexis Cemetery. No visitation hours are planned. Memorials may be given to the St. Jude Children's Hospital. Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel, Monmouth is in charge of the local arrangements
