A.J. received his early education in Illinois schools and graduated at Stetson University, Deland, Florida in 1920, he also took courses at the University of Chicago. He married Virginia Trueheart Marrow in 1923 in Virginia, they had one daughter Lillian Alice. they moved to Greenville, S.C., in 1930, where he was superintendent of grade schools in a city of 60,000. He obtained his M.A. degree at Duke University in 1935. Doctor A.J. Parkhurst rec'd his Ph.D. from the University of NC in 1939. He was the Dean of Sul Ross State University, lived in Ocala, Florida, and died of cancer Sept.. 20, 1943.
He was active in church and civic affairs in Alpine, TX and was an elder in the Alpine First Presbyterian Church, a member of the Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Boy Scout Council. A.J. died in Boydton, VA at the home of his father-in-law, Dr. D. Hunter Marrow, after an illness of several months. Dr. Parkhurst was survived by his wife, Virginia, of Union Level and one daughter, Miss Lillian Alice Parkhurst; two sisters, Mrs. Royce Smith and Mrs. Allen Wooley, both of Illinois and three brothers, Reuben, Raymond and Clarence Parkhurst also of Illinois.
