Leota R. Smoot, 93, lifelong Muskogee resident, died Thursday, May 22, 2008 at Pleasant Valley Health Care Center. She was born May 15, 1915 in Muskogee to Lester and Vera (Rich) Croman. Leota was educated in the Muskogee public school system and graduated from Central High School.
On February 2, 1935, Leota was married to Wilburn H. Smoot in Muskogee. Leota and Wilburn started a family a couple of years after their marriage and she stayed home to raise her children. During World War II Wilburn was in the service, stationed in California. Leota packed up the car and she and her young family followed Wilburn to San Diego where he was stationed. They returned to their home in Muskogee soon after. She was a wonderful woman and a loving and forgiving person. Her family was the most important part of her life, especially her children. She loved having them at home to spend time with and always saddened by school starting in the fall. Later in life she enjoyed spending quality time with her grandchildren.
Mrs. Smoot placed a priority on her faith. She was a charter member of Honor Heights Methodist Church and has also been a longtime member of Wesley United Methodist Church. She nurtured a church family relationship that was the foundation of her children's faith. She taught by example and was always Christian-like in her actions.
Leota Smoot lived life to the fullest. She loved listening to music and was an avid book reader. She was a fabulous cook, loved to garden and care for her flower beds. Crafts of any kind seemed to come naturally to Leota. She liked ceramics, sewing and learned to do beadwork. All her hobbies were usually capped off at the end of the night with a bowl of ice cream. She loved sweets and liked to reward herself for a long day of activities.
Mrs. Smoot was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wilburn H. Smoot; and three brothers, Garold L. Croman, Francis R. Croman, Leonard A. Croman.
She is survived by her three daughters, Lolita Myers and husband Donald, Nola Falwell and husband Irven and Mary Hall and husband Tom all of Muskogee; two sons, Delbert Smoot and wife Glenda of Muskogee and David Smoot and wife Janice of Springfield, MO; one sister, Anita Whitaker of Muskogee; 15 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; several great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, May 27, 2008 at Fosters' Ivory Chapel with Rev. Clint Purtell officiating. Interment will follow in Greenhill Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Mrs. Smoot's grandsons. Viewing will be 9:30 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. on Sunday and Monday.
Funeral services are under the direction of Foster-Petering Funeral Home.
