Mary, or Molly - as only her Dad and brother Lute called her - was the daughter of Clarence and Hester Isabel Hayes Pettis. She had 6 siblings: Luther, Iyla, Audrey, Ida Dell, Mike and Jean. She was a delicate but happy child, who suffered greatly from Migraine headaches when nothing was known about them. She lost her father when she was only 9 years old and had to depend on her resourceful and loving mother, and older brother Lute. (She talked about her father nearly every day when she became dependent on her own children later in life.)
Despite a difficult childhood, she learned a great deal about life and children. She grew to be a beautiful intelligent and practical woman learning skills in homemaking and child development and language arts. She put all this to good use raising 6 children and fostering over 20 babies from the Lutheran Child Welfare Services in Mpls.MN. ( along with the help of her husband, Robert).
