This is such a great picture! My great-grandfather with his two children--my grandfather and his sister, Ruth. From my grandfather's apparent age, this would be about 1904 or 1905. It must have been the front porch at 316 McKinley Ave in Avalon, although the front doesn't look anything like this any more.

This is the one my uncle had labeled "James M Minteer when he first came to Pittsburgh". In 1889 he was all of 20 years old--but didn't turn 20 until August 23. So he was still a teenager when he signed the Apprenticeship Agreement on April 9.

The labels had come off the backs of the old tin-types, and so it is not known for sure which friend of Jim's is which in this and the other picture. Their names were John Henry and Frank Brown.

Carpenter's Crew, with my great-grandfather at left, marked with the "x". The older man in the middle is likely Alex Gilliland, with whom he apprenticed for three years...or at least that was his intention when he signed the contract on April 9, 1889.

When people in Allegheny wanted to escape from the congestion of the city, they went to Riverview Park, and I suspect that this is where this photo was taken. Ruth labeled the people as follows: "Back, left to right: Ruby Minteer and James, Mr. Kemler, Harry Minteer, Sr., and Bess Malloy. Front, left to right: Mrs. Kemler, Grandma Weber, and Aunt Ella."

On the back is written "Aug 1956 - 50 yr. Jim", but what it could be the 50th anniversary of is not known. I had thought that perhaps it was a military group, but a 50th anniversary for Spanish American War vets would have been 1948 or 1949. I have my great-grandfather's Quarterly Working Card from the fourth quarter of 1950, Local 211 of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters & Joiners of America, A.F. of L. I also have his dog tags, which I assume were from the Spanish American War. Minteer, James M 13 190036 T45 46 A P
