Governor of Gibraltar. In 1695, during the Nine Years' War, he fought at the Seige of Namur, and then served in Flanders throughout the War of Spanish Succession, commanding his Regiment at the Battle of Blenheim in 1704, at the Battle of Oudenarde in 1708 and then at the Seige of Lille later that year. He was an MP in the government interest for Berwick, where he also remained governor until 1730. In March 1727 he was made lieutenant-general and in July 1730 was promoted to general. During 1730 he was sent to Gibraltar as governor. He was twice married firstly to Hester, daughter of Henry Whitfield of Bishop Stortford in Hertfordshire, and secondly Margaretta, youngest daughter of Charles Newsham of Chadshunt, Warwickshire - they had five children.
