COL Peter F. Cohen, ARNG, (Ret), a Lifetime member of the U.S. Army War College (USAWC) Alumni Association, passed away on 29 June 2002. COL Cohen had performed his Reserve duties at the College's Center for Strategic Leadership (Collins Hall).

Colonel Peter F. Cohen served as the U.S. Army Reserve Chief, Operations and Plans Observer Controller at the Center for Strategic Leadership (CSL) from 1999 until he passed away at Carlisle Barracks in June of 2002, less than three weeks after retiring at age 60. He was instrumental in inviting many Reserve Soldiers to help sport the Strategic Crisis Exercise and was one of the original Individual Mobilization Augmentees assigned to CSL.

His previous assignments included G2, 38th Infantry Division, India Army National Guard; Chief, Military Liaison Team Bratislava, Slovakia; and Admissions Liaison Officer for the United States Military Academy (USMA) for over twenty years. He was an Army War College graduate of the Class of 1994 (Corresponding Studies) and had made significant progress on his dissertation for a doctorate degree from Indiana University. He was a scholar, patriot, humanitarian and fiend to all.

As a lasting tribute to COL Cohen's service to CSL, USAWC, USMA, the Department of the Army and our Nation, as well as his support to innumerable soldiers and friends, two Memorial Benches with engrave brass plaques were presented to Carlisle Barracks in a ceremony August 12, 2005, at the Battle of the Bulge Memorial Grove near the Center for Strategic Leadership. Friends and co-workers collected donations through the Carlisle Barracks Chapel to purchase the benches.

His family initiated the Colonel Peter F. Cohen Scholarship Fund at Indiana University. This scholarship is available for ROTC or Army Reserve students of he Jewish faith, majoring in History or Military Science. Those interested in applying for the scholarship should contact the Indiana University Foundation at 812-855-2670.

In addition, COL Cohen's sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Barton L. Satsky, made a generous contribution to the Army War College Foundation in their brother's memory. A portion of the funds is restricted to expenses of the Center for Strategic Leadership.

Following 2 years active duty with the U.S. Army form October 5, 1966 to August 21, 1968 and 4 years in the U.S. Army Reserve from August 22, 1968 to October 4, 1972, he was appointed as a Captain in the Indiana Army National Guard on January 31, 1980.

His assignments were primarily in S-2 and G-2, Intelligence. He served in 2d Brigade, 38th Infantry Division from January 1980 to January 1983, in the 76th Brigade, 38th Infantry Division from January 1983 to October 1987, in Headquarters, 38th Infantry Division from October 1987 to June 1994, and Headquarters, State Area Command (STARC) from June 1994 until his separation on June 29, 1995.

Among his duties within the Indiana Army National Guard, he served on the Military Liaison Team to the Republic of Slovakia from September 1994 to June 1995.

Upon his separation from the Indiana National Guard, he was transferred to the USAR Control Group and then attached to the U.S. Army War College as a Special Projects Officer from February 1997 until his death.
