An Avro Anson aircraft, serial number A4-5, receiving attention from ground crew at an airfield in Australia. This aircraft crashed in the Blue Mountains at at Lapstone, NSW on 28 January 1941. It was flying 1704 Pilot Officer (PO) Bailey Middlebrook Sawyer from Parkes to Sydney for urgent medical treatment. The pilot was PO John Ignatius Newman, of 1 Air Navigation School (1ANS), Parkes; also on board were Squadron Leader James Manning 'Doc' Rainbow (Station Medical Officer, RAAF Station Parkes); 625 Flying Officer Henry Theodore 'Tam' Skillman, of 1ANS, navigator; and 5922 Aircraftman 1 Charles Richard Tyson, wireless operator. All were killed in the accident.
He is commemorated on the Roll of Honour in APSLEY VIC, also Bailey Middlebrook Sawyer's name is located at panel 116 in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial.
Son of Wells M. Sawyer and Kathleen Sawyer; husband of Norma Dorota Sawyer, of South Yarra, Victoria, New South Wales, Australia.
