JOSEPH RICHARD (JAKE) SMITH, 77, of 202 Ball Street in Springfield, died at 9:05 a.m., Sunday, June 14, 1992, at Humana Hospital Audubon in Louisville, Ky. A native of Washington County, he was born on December 6, 1914, to the late Herman and Kate Fowler Smith. A member of the St. Dominic's Catholic Church, Smith was an Army Air Corp Veteran of World War II, a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Disabled American Veterans. Smith served as deputy sheriff of Washington County from 1955 to 1961, was an enforcement officer for the State Department of Motor Transportation and a guard for the Springfield State Bank and The Mackville Agency of Springfield State Bank. He served for a number of years as a city police officer, police dispatcher and City Police Judge. He had served as a commissioner for the State Board of Elections for 12 years. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Frances Howard Smith, one son, Joseph E. Smith of Louisville, one step-daughter, Mrs. Bonnie Goad of Nashville; three grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Also surviving are three half-sisters, Mrs. Ann Murphy of Springfield; Mrs. Aline Ball of Lebanon; and Mrs. Nodie Barber of Illinois. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Thursday at the Carey and Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Joseph Hayden, pastor of the St. Dominic's Catholic Church, officiating. Burial was in St. Rose Cemetery. Serving as honorary pallbearers were Cecil Stallings, Jack Sallee, O.T. Hardesty, Damien Blandford, and A.H. Robertson. Active pallbearers were Michael Smith, Ralph Bertrand, Jeffrey Saultzman, John Thomas, Artie Porter, and Eugene Rhoton. A prayer service was held at 7: 30 p.m. Wednesday at the Carey & Son Funeral Home which was in charge of the arrangements.
