Nancy Evelyn "Evie" Brown and twin brother, Henry, were the second and third of ten children born to William Lafayette "Fate" Brown and Mary Rachel Steward on October 5, 1914 in the rural community of Woodstock north of New Boston, Texas in Bowie County. Henry died shortly after birth.

She married Willie Edward "Eddie" Farris, December 17, 1933, in Bowie County, Texas. They had two sons and one daughter; Hershel Dalton Farris, Willie Lester Farris, and Velma Faye Farris.

After Eddie's accidental death in 1946, she married James Lester McGough, March 5, 1949, in Little River County, Arkansas. He was widowed the previous year and had seven children from that marriage, six daughters; Daisy, Imogene, Jewell, Bula, Patsy Sue, Shirley; and one son, James Lester McGough, Jr.

Evelyn and Lester raised their combined ten children. They had no children of their own.
