BIOGRAPHICAL:

B. F. Allen, blacksmith and proprietor of a woodwork and general repairing shop, was born in N.C., Sept. 19, 1838, the son of Simon and Hannah Allen. He spent his early life on the home farm, and at the age of 15 began to learn the blacksmith's and woodworker's trade, being an apprentice for 4 years. At the age of 21, he opened a shop of his own. He married in June of 1860 to Sarah Jane Job, a native of N.C., born Jan. 8, 1837. After his marriage, he worked 4 years in Snow Camp Foundry, N.C. He conscripted to the Confederates States army, but refused to serve on account of his Quaker prejudices and was excused. He came to Indiana in 1870 and settled in Henry Co., he lived here for 3 years then returned to N.C. He then returned 2 years later to Henry Co., IN and settled in Ashland, where he started a lucrative business. He is the manufacturer of the Allen's 2-horse harrow. He and his wife are members of the Friend's Society. They had 3 children: David T., John W. and Jonathan L. Mr. Allen owned a good residence and business in Ashland.
