The son of John Gould an Englishman and Nancy Fox, who later married Jacob Wendell in New York. He and his sister were raised by Jacob Wendell in Herkimer County, New York.

George left New York state in 1848, first moving to Washington County, Wisconsin, where his sister, Nancy Jane (Gould) Haner resided. Eventually he went to Fillmore County, Minnesota in 1857 and then to Otter Tail County in 1868

Married #1 Amanda Williams, and after her death, he married #2 Eleanor Colwell Sherman, daughter of Jacob and Rhoda (Sterns) Sherman. Through his marriage to Eleanor, is where he probably became a portion of the Morman branch off known as the "Cutlerites." One of their disbeliefs of the parent Morman group was that they did not believe in polygomy. This group branched out on their own and established their own community called Clitherall, in Otter Tail County, Minnesota.
