FATHER OF MRS. O'KELLEY IS KILLED

High Power Electric Line Causes Death of W. Clark Hughes

Mr. W. Clark Hughes, prominent 63-year old Bossier planter and state solon, was killed instantly at about 6:00 p. m. Friday when he touched a cistern faucet that had been charged with a high voltage of electricity when a power line fell during a fire.

Mr. Hughes, who is the father of Mrs. W. F. O'Kelley, wife of the Presbyterian Pastor at Minden, was fighting a fire in his store in Vanceville, seven miles from Shreveport on the Benton road, when the tragedy happened. He had already filled a bucket of water and dashed it on the flames and collected several more to fill. Those he carried to the cistern upon which the wire had fallen and made preparations to draw water. Bystanders who saw sparks streaming from the wire where it touched the store and cistern shouted warnings, but Mr. Hughes, in the excitement, evidently did not hear, touched the hydrant and was instantly electrocuted.

Mr. Hughes was one of the foremost planters in North Louisiana and was for many years a leading figure in the political life of the state. At one time, in 1924, he was speaker in the state house of representatives, but lost the position in 1928.

He had extensive land and timber holdings, and has held the position of representative for a period of nearly 28 years.

Surviving Mr. Hughes are his widow, who was Miss Anne Oliver of Nashville, Tenn., one brother, John F. Hughes of Shreveport; a sister, Mrs. O. L. Henderson of Shreveport; three daughters, Mrs. W. F. O'Kelley, wife of the Presbyterian minister at Minden, Mrs. S. A. Dowell, Jr., of Winaumo, Fla.; and Mrs. Elizabeth Tucker of Shreveport and seven grandchildren, S. A. Dowell, III, Clark Hughes Dowell of Florida; Margery O'Kelley, Frances O'Kelley, Keith O'Kelley of Minden; Betty Tucker and William Hughes Tucker of Shreveport.

Funeral services will be held from the family residence at 839 Robinson place at 3 o'clock this afternoon with Dr. Jasper K. Smith, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, officiating. The interment will be in the Rocky Mountain cemetery.
