Jacob Lewis Crecelius was the son of George J. Crecelius & Elizabeth Keller. In 1882 he moved from central Iowa to the Dakota Territory and homesteaded a quarter-section of land in what is now Spring Lake Township, Hand County, South Dakota. Adjacent quarter-sections were homesteaded by his father George, his older brother Will, and his sister Etta and her husband Aaron Coulter. All but Jake later returned to Iowa.

On 21 April 1889, Jake married Laura Ann Hudson, daughter of Arthur Thomas Hudson & Nancy C. Kline. Laura was born 9 April 1863 at Preston, Fillmore County, Minnesota; died 27 May 1937 at Miller, South Dakota; buried beside her husband. They had four children:
Roy Elsworth Crecelius (1891-1971)
Gertrude Olive "Gertie" Crecelius (1892-1937)
Hiram Walter Crecelius (1894-1985)
Florence Mae Crecelius Whitlow (1899-1971)

Roy and Gertie never married and are buried in the Crecelius family lot with their parents. At the back of the lot stands a large reddish granite monument with the name Crecelius; at the front is a flat headstone for each of the four family members. Gertie died less than two months after her mother. In February 1971, Roy died in a fire at the Crecelius farmhouse where he lived. His youngest sister Florence died the following month on 30 March.

The surviving sibling, Hiram Crecelius, wanted the four headstones to match, so when he ordered Roy's marker in 1971, he replaced the earlier 1930s stones of his parents & his sister Gertie with the headstones that are there now.
