Edwin Larson was one of a set of twin boys, the last children born to William Larson and Brita Hauge Larson. Upon the death of their mother, the twins were split up to be raised by other families, and twin Olaf died as a toddler. Edwin moved with his father to Alexander, McKenzie County, North Dakota, after the turn of the century. He registered for the World War I draft in 1917, a resident of McKenzie County. He was drafted and served overseas during the war.

After the war, Edwin returned to the family farm in Norman County, and on June 19, 1922, he married Norwegian immigrant Valborg Helen Hanson Veium, in Mayville, North Dakota.

They lived the remainder of their lives in Norman County.
