Like all the Weber kids, Bertha Weber worked many jobs growing up, from rolling cigars to managing an ice cream and candy store. She attended Bosse High School, though she quit before graduation.

In about 1939 or '40, she was in a candy store on Main Street when she ran into C.E. "Bud" Alvey. "She was a doll baby, I tell you what," Bud recalled in 2008 with a chuckle. "She really was." They hit it off and were married in Dec. 31, 1940 in Evansville. A few years later, Bud went off to World War II, serving as a second lieutenant in the Army Air Corps.

In the Army, Bud, who had worked many manufacturing jobs for Sunbeam and other companies, found his true calling. He learned he enjoyed the company of salesmen. "When I came out I decided I wasn't going back into a manufacturing facility…," he said. "I decided (sales was) what I was going to do."

Bud was a natural, quickly winning a job with International Harvester and working his way to manager of the motor truck division, including a three-year stint in Chicago. "As long as I could stand it," he said.

In about 1955, Bud opened Alvey-Scott Motors as a partnership with W.R. Scott. It's unclear how they met, but they sold and serviced GMC trucks. The company was very successful. In December 1980 or 1981, Bud sold Alvey-Scott Motors to Palmer Trucks and it became the Evansville Truck Center.

Bud and Bert had two kids, Pat and Brian. Bert was a gifted cook, having learned from her mother such specialties as German potato salad. "Her cookbook has been a prize of the family," Bud said. "The daughters in law all wanted it." Bert also was an avid golfer and enjoyed bowling. She is buried at St. Joseph Cemetery.

Bertha "Bert" Alvey, 83, of Evansville, passed away on Tuesday, June 29, 2004, at VNA Charlier Hospice Center.

Bert was a former member of the Evansville and Rolling Hills Country Clubs. She was an avid golfer and enjoyed bowling and cooking.

Bert is survived by her husband of 63 years, C.E. Bud Alvey; two sons, Patrick H. Alvey and Brian J. Alvey, both of Evansville; five grandchildren, Shannon Rae Mattingly and Kateland, Emalie, Mark and Natalie Alvey. Also surviving are three sisters, Betty Clark, Mary Ann Van Britson and Alyne Thompson, all of Evansville.

Services 1 p.m. Friday, July 2, at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel, 800 South Hebron Avenue, with Monsignor Maurilius Bilskie officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.
