During WW I, Jesse was hit in the head by a shell fragment and later said he had a steel plate in his head. He told me that it bothered him (hurt) and he was afraid he would hurt one of his family if he stayed, so he left them. He deserted his wife Margaret and their three children. Margaret waited for Jesse for several years, but she finally divorced him and eventually moved on with her life. In 1945 she married his brother, Monroe Root. Jesse and Margaret's children have regarded Monroe as their father.
