1921 - 2010 BENNINGTON, VT Martina L. Maloney, 88, a resident of Dewey Street in Bennington, died on Saturday morning, Jan. 16, 2010, at the Village of Fillmore Pond following a brief illness.
Mrs. Maloney was born in Bennington on Nov. 5, 1921, daughter of Joseph and Irene Betit LaRoche. She received her education in local schools and was a graduate of Bennington High School.
She married John H. Maloney on Oct. 13, 1945, at Sacred Heart Church in Bennington. Mr. Maloney was elected county sheriff in 1947. He predeceased her in 2005. For many years, Martina had participated in the operation of the Bennington County Jail with her husband.
In earlier years, she and her husband had been avid golfers and members of the Mount Anthony Country Club for several years. She enjoyed playing cribbage and cooking. She had also cooked for the inmates at the jail for many years.
Martina leaves her son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Donna Maloney of Bennington; her two daughters, Maureen Legacy of Philadelphia, Pa., and Kathleen Jelley of North Pownal. She also leaves 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; ifive brothers, Leo LaRoche of Hoosick Falls, N.Y., Richard LaRoche of Manchester, Robert LaRoche of Nebraska, Andre LaRoche and Paul LaRoche, both of Bennington. She has one sister, Claire Regini of Rhode Island, and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
She was predeceased by one brother, Francis LaRoche.
FUNERAL NOTICE: A prayer service will be Thursday, Jan. 21, at 9:30 a.m. at the MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME, 628 Main St. in Bennington, followed by a Mass of Christian Death and Burial at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart St. Francis De Sales Church in Bennington. Interment will follow in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery in Bennington. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, Jan. 20, from 4-7 p.m.
