Mrs. Mary Raper Spear, aged 81, died Tuesday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John E. Cornell, of 5116 Blackstone Ave. Funeral services were conducted at the daughter's home. Interment private at Graceland cemetery.
Mrs. Spear was one of Chicago and Hyde Park's pioneer residents, and during her long life she cemented many friendships by her fine character and graces of manner.
Mrs. Spear was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in the year 1845. She was the daughter of Holley Raper and Mary Ramsey Raper of Cincinnati, Ohio. Her father was very prominent in his home state in early days, and his name is perpetuated in the noted Holley Raper Commandery. K.T., of Cincinnati.
Mrs. Spear was a descendent of Jeremiah Morrow, the first governor of Ohio. She came to Chicago 65 years ago, and before her marriage she sang in the choir of the church of the famous Robert Collyer on Wabash Avenue. She was married in the year 1869 to William H. Spear, then of Boston, who survives her, and is head of the W.H. Spear Company, engaged in the steel business.
Surviving her besides her husband are the following children: Harry E. Spear, proprietor of the South Shore hotel and a co-proprietor of the Hyde Park hotel; Katherine Spear Cornell, wife of John E. Cornell; William Holley Spear, Kenneth K. Spear, and Mary Spear Bard, wife of Ralph A. Bard. All the children live in Chicago.
