OBITUARY Iron County Reporter Feb 9 2000 “Obituaries: Merle Smith”
TIPLER, Wis.-Merle Smith, 79, of 480 Lilly Pad Road, died Feb. 1 at St. Lukes Hospital in Milwaukee.
He was born March 12, 1920 in Elton, Wis. The son of the late Lewis and Molly (Reid) Smith moved to Tipler with his parents and attended the Wilde Rose School and the Tipler schools. On Aug. 30, 1941 he married the former Phyllis Durand at the Maple Grove Chapel in Tipler. The couple made their home in Tipler. He was a self employed farmer and logger in the Tipler area for many years. He enjoyed trapping and the outdoors. He was a member of the Grace Covenant Church in Stambaugh, the Hiawatha Gun Club of Camp Gibbs and a former member of the Iron River Elks Lodge. He was preceded in death by a daughter Cindy L. Bandy Nov. 15, 1984; two brothers, Raymond and Lewis; and two sisters, Elizabeth Lemke and Cora Apostol.
He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Judy (Mark) Chybowski of Marshfield, Wis. and Barbara Smith of Iron River; two brothers, Earl (Eileen) of Tipler and Veeser (Gwen) of Long Lake, Wis.; three sisters, Iva Cole of Florence, Wis., Nova Lemke of Madison, Wis. and Beulah Kasten of Madison; five grandchildren, Brett (Kristi) Smith of Anchorage, Alaska, Scott Bandy of Brownsberg, Ind., Anna, Joseph and Jena Chybowski of Brookfield, Wis.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation and funeral services were held Feb. 5 at Grace Covenant Church in Stambaugh with the Rev. Douglas Cederberg, pastor, officiating.
Pallbearers were Jack, Reginald, Richard and Ryne Smith, Lawrence Jensen and Gary Sarafiny.
Organist Carolyn Lindahl accompanied soloist Lynn Fish on musical selections “Day By Day” and “Precious Lord.”
Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery in Iron River.
Jacobs Funeral Home of Iron River was in charge of arrangements.

Merle and Phyllis Smith of Tipler, Wisc. celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary at Covenant Point Bible Camp Aug. 2. Their daughter Judy Chybowski and Phyllis’s sister Marvel Smith planned the party. They also observed the event at a dinner party at Zippedy Duda Aug. 31.
