Leona was the youngest daughter and one of 12 children of George B and Mattie (Richardson) Sanders. Leona changed her name from Lula after getting married around 1925 to Able Haken. By 1930 she and Able moved to North Dakota and moved to the Walla Walla, WA area around 1934. She and Able had three daughters:

Elsie, Evelyn, and Dorothy
