Sister M. Canisia Cahalan, SSND
(Born Eva Cahalan)
Sister Mary Canisia, SSND, died May 4, 1965, at seventy-three years of age. The last day of her life was as busy and as happy as her whole life had been.
Born Eva Cahalan in rural Iowa, she was the youngest in a family of sixteen children. She attended Saint Mary's Academy at Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, from which she was graduated. After her entrance into the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1912, she obtained a B.A. degree from Marquette University, a M.A. degree from Loyola University, Chicago, and a Ph.D. in Sociology from Fordham University in 1930. She taught at Saint Mary's, Prairie du Chien, first in the Academy and then in the College; at The Academy of Our Lady, Longwood, Chicago; and, then, in 1929, she pioneered at the new campus of Mount Mary College. She organized, taught in, and administered the Sociology Department, as she did later (1958-1961) at Marillac College, Normandy, Missouri. Under her administration, the minor in Social Work was introduced and chapters of honor societies in Sociology and Social Work were formed.
An excellent teacher, Sister Canisia gave generously of her time and interest to her students. Her life was one of total dedication.
